lyrics

In a little town, in a little life,
Lived a baker, his family and his wife.
He worked for the people, baked them bread,
From dawn to dusk, from rise to bed.
For all of his years he had been in this town,
Learnt his trade, it came handed down.
From his father before him, and now to his son,
The lines of the trade are deep as they run.

This was the way of the man and his friends,
They lived a life with no need for amends.
They just did what they did
in thier own quiet way,
With a truth and a hope for a better day.
Such was the flour of this well kept land,
Known for its dignity and it’s open hand.
Known for its music and its eloquent rhymes,
And the peace of the Good men
of many life times.

Then to the town rode noble brave knights,
To seek absolution and to uphold the rights.
Of the church to sort out
all the goats from the sheep,
To make pure bread
with no chaff in the wheat.
But how can you know
what’s in someone’s heart or head?
So the knights asked their Bishop,
who’s reply it is said,
To those who had asked him
whom to make to atone was,
“kill them all - God will know his own”.
